As part of my A2 Media Studies coursework I have to analyse three music videos in detail. I have chosen the first video as Kayne West - All Of The Lights ft Rihanna.
'All Of The Lights' is a song by an American hip-hop artist Kayne West, released 18 January 2011. This song was the fourth single from his fifth studio album 'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy' Which was released in 2010 which included other additional vocals from several other recording artists, including Alicia Keys, Fergie and Rihanna.The single reached number 18 on the billboard top 100 and number 2 on the hot R&B/Hip Hop charts. The song was well-received by music critics who complimented the detailed production and dramatically themed style. The song sold over 1,000,000 copies by May 2011.
The clip, shot in Los Angeles, opens with a black and white scene of a youngster seemingly on her way to school, backpack in tow.
Then pops of colour jump on screen as visuals of the songs lyrics glowing and blinking they appear at a dizzying speed.
It was filmed in January 2011 and directed by Hype Williams who is a well respected director in the music industry.
With the video beginning with a child walking alone down a road this could relate to the lyrics were Kayne West says "I won't let her grow up in this ghetto universally'. The video follows the lyrics throughout this is used as it keeps the audience interested and helps them to understand what the lyrics are about. Also it has a narrative within it where Kayne West finds his girlfriend sleeping with someone else this is shown in the video for the same reason. The video is not largely narrative but is enough to help the audience understand and be interested.
Quick pace of changing shots and close ups of Kayne west are regularly used throughout the music video, this makes Kayne west the centre of attention and also shows some of the conventions of a hip-hop video where the artist performing is very confident and in your face.
Some of the conventions used in this video are things like like glasses and necklace that Kayne wears this is used to show off the fact that he has the money and the lifestyle of this type of person it also shows his confident nature.
The cutting rhythm of the song is quicker than most music videos. This is because the cutting rhythm is going in time with the speed of the song. As the song hits the bridge the cutting pace slows down and has fades in with helps to understand that the rhythm of the song is slowing down. This video is performance and narrative based but mainly performance based this is what I want my video to be like.
Kanye analysis - take out the ‘shot two months ago’ bit.
