Shooting Schedule;


I managed to get everyone to come to the drama studio for the dance shots. This worked really well, I ended up with around 20 people. This keeps my filming organised and also helps me as I have a set deadline. I have so far followed all of my deadlines on this sheet.


This is the order in which I plan on filming my video. I only have the first couple of cut aways on this one, and when I have finished doing these I will post another shooting schedule with later filming on. I decided to do a shooting schedule at it makes organising filming with the actors much easier and you also have a target to work towards instead of just film when possible.


I wrote this on the white board in the sixth form common room. This was a set date for the dancing scenes within my video. I needed as many people as I could possibly have, I ended up with around 20 which was enough to fill the shot and make the shot also look like a real club.

Props;

Throughout my music video there are props that I use which are conventions of a normal Hip-Hop music video these include things like sunglasses and bling necklace's. The reason I decided to keep within the usual conventions and props used in a Hip-Hop music video is so that there is some structure to the video while being unique in different ways.

 Another prop which I will be used a lot throughout the filming of my music video is strobe lights. As these are very strong flashing lights which gives the effect of quick pace movement and a club environment. These worked really well when shooting the group dance scene as you can just see people dancing and flashing lights which is the effect I was looking for. I will also being using glitter and demonetise throughout used in cut aways this is to give the effect of flash and bling where diamonds would have the same effect. I think that this will work really well when contrasted with the people dancing in the club, as I plan to put glitter on a speaker then turn the bass up on the speakers so that the glitter bounces off giving the impression the music is really loud and yet again gives the image of flash and bling.







Costume;

Feyi; Being "Tinie Tempah" I wanted him to wear some thing which gave him confidence and also something that would show he has flash clothes due to his "Hip Hop" look. These are all regular conventions of a hip hop artist which is why I wanted him to also fit in with these conventions. Having him wearing a Ralph Lauren jumper, added a brand onto his clothing so people automatically think expensive.






Ola; Having him as "Labrinth" I wanted him to wear something that made him confident also and something which has a brand logo on so people would think about the cost and the fact that they can afford it as they are meant to be hip hop artists. A regular convention of a hip hop artist is to wear clothing which suits their confident personality, bold clothing I feel worked best to portray this side of both their personalities.

Locations;

Green Screen;

Against the green screen is where I will be filming my main performer singing the song, this is so I can change what is going on behind him and I can also add special effects to make the video more interesting.

Drama Studio;



Another place where I will be filming a lot is in the Drama studio. This is because you can make the room very dark and it works really well with the strobe lights. There is also a white wall in there so if I need to I can also film my performer against that wall to give the video a simple yet effective shot.

Outside;



This is where I will be filming most of my cut aways which will be outside, as this allows me to do more creative things outside and also the marking on the floor make the shot more interesting for the audience.

Storyboard;


Storyboard 1; This is the opening sequence to my music video where I introduce the artist into the video and you see people running towards where the music is coming from.


Storyboard 2; This is where the pace of the song becomes quicker which means there is a quicker pace of cutting and also more movement involved in each scene.


Storyboard 3; Mainly the scenes which have writing on them on in this storyboard this is to make my video more interesting by having different ideas and cutaways of writing and people.


Storyboard 4; Again quick cutting pace and also close-ups used to show the conventions of a hip-hop music video. Also the main performer is seen close up this is a factor running throughout which helps the audience to say interested.


Storyboard 5; Using slow motion in this storyboard to give different feelings to the pace of the song, as the song begins to slow down there is also a slower cutting pace. At the end writing is used again to have the same effect as before.


Storyboard 6; Using mainly round things to use as cutaways allows the cutting to blend and work really well. Also the music begins to speed up again so the cutting becomes quicker again.


Storyboard 7; More cutaways and more shots of main performer singing within the dancers. Club feeling.


Storyboard 8; Dancing and flash cars are used as cutaways as they are yet again conventions of a hip-hop music video.


Storyboard 9; This is the end sequence where the song is chancing from the bridge to the end at the end I pan on having a slow motion part where someone falls onto a mat and it says pass out and flickers really quickly between all four of the last scenes.

Risk Assessment;

Before I began filming I had to take out a risk assessment to ensure that everyone was safe and that no one would get hurt during the filming of this music video. This will also help me in checking extra carefully that everything is safe including what they are wearing at the time. My main risk was the lighting that I would be using as they are strobe lights I will have to ensure that  no one who I am filming has epilepsy or anyone that could be affected by the lighting used.

Demographics and Psychgraphics;

I created this demographic and psychgraphic model of my target audience to help me get an idea of what I needed to add within my video and my ancillary tasks to appeal to this target audience. It will also help me when deciding what conventions to use throughout.

Target Audience;



This is Alex she is 18 and enjoys to listen to Hip-Hop/R&B songs and also enjoys watching video's which have quick pace to them. She listens to these songs on music channels such as MTV music, Flava, Starz music and Viva. Also she likes to go out mainly to have a dance and a good time, she says that she enjoys driving and would some day like to own a top of the range Mercedes.

Questionnaire Results;

This helped me decide what type of things I wanted in my video as these are mainly the conventions of a Hip-Hop video. Dancing was the highest one with four people saying they would expect to see it in a Hip-Hop video this relates to my storyboard which has a lot of dancing throughout the video. Therefore I will make sure that I have a lot of dancing throughout my video.


The majority of the people who filled out this questionnaire said that they would prefer the video to follow the conventions of the genre of the song, This helped me to think of different cutaways that I could use in my video of the conventions of a Hip-hop song for example champagne and cars.


As you can see the majority of the people who filled in the questionnaire said that they would rather watch a music video which has both narrative and performance elements in. This has been used in my research as I have decided to have the main performer performing in different places throughout the video and also to have different dancers throughout.




The results show that the main person that people want to see is the performer, this is why I have the performer in my video. The drummer and guitarist are not as important as they are not normally (unless they are in a band) the type of people that they want to see. Sticking just with the performer gives me a bigger chance to expand on the shots and get him to sing in different locations and surrounding making the video more interesting.


This has also helped me to decide the type of cutaways I should have in my music video, most people thought that cars was the one that most related to the convention of a Hip-Hop video although this could be hard to find a flash car that someone would let me film so I decided to use speakers, champagne, jewellery and sunglasses.

3rd Music Video Analysis. Professor Green - Read All About It.



The deeply personal lyrics deal with the passing of Professor Green's father. This is shown through the way the narrative is constructed to show his father and the way he used to be. The track is very deep and meaningful this is relayed almost instantly with an establishing shot of Professor Green looking very 'thoughtful' and almost 'upset'.


This shot is the first thing that the viewers are really able to engage with and understand his feelings. This establishing close-up shot, along with the title of the song "Read All About It" is all about the press invading his personal life. The fact that he cant have anything private anymore not even with his father whom he didn't really speak to for most of his life. Another way in which this could be portrayed is that he finds it hard to open out to people, so writing it down and letting people read it seems like the easiest option. This challenges the usual conventions of a hip hop rapper as they are seen to be confident and never seem to let anything fase them, audiences may be able to relate and understand his emotions and therefore are able to engage fully into the video. The plan and simple background depicts that this is something that shouldn't be seen to be in your face and over the top.

So put it in all of the papers, I’m not afraid,
They can read all about it, read all about it,

This is reinforcing the idea that he is feeling very upset about the way he feels and also most shows that he regrets not telling his father the way he feels as obviously now it is too late. This is also portraying the way the media is influencing and twisting what he is saying which from the viewers point of view could be one of the main reasons why him and his father never made up.






The fact that you see Professor Green singing in different places from different angles makes the video interesting rather than just a mid shot of him singing. This is the type of thing that I want to do with my performer is have him singing in different places and I'll take different shots which is relevant to the type of song which I am doing, maybe using the green screen.



The end shot of this video is very striking as it shows Professor Green and his younger self looking at each other with shadows. The lighting used looks really effective and has given me some ideas as to how I am going to use lighting in an effective way.



Last year's debut album Alive Till I'm Dead went double-Gold, and three hit singles contributed to a combined half-million sales. The album won awards at the MOBO's, NME and the BT Digital Music Award for Breakthrough Artist of the Year. Things are lined up to explode with his release of upcoming album, At Your Inconvenience, released the week after this single.

In 2006, at the age of 23, he released his first mix tape, Lecture #1.



His melody-laden rhymes, metaphors and unique humour are not the only thing that makes Green so individual. He is also renowned for winning battle rap competitions and being signed by Mike Skinner. Life experiences have made him stronger, which includes being stabbed in the neck and collaborating with Lily Allen just two months later.
‘The Green Lectures Vol 1’ has host of bangers including, ‘Upper Clapton Dance, ‘Drunken Freestyle’ and ‘Stereotypical Man’. He has string features such as Skinnyman, Loudmouth and Leo The Lion. After his first record label, The Beats, went under he produced on his own an EP called The Green EP. But after he toured with Lily Allen  he was signed to Virgin Records and released "I Need You Tonight", based around INXS's "Need You Tonight" through the label. He also joined up with Lily Allen in "Just Be Good To Green" which is based around The SOS Band's "Just Be Good to Me"

2nd Music Analysis. Jay-Z - Dirt off Your Shoulder.



Dirt Of Your Shoulders was the second single released off Jay-Z's 2003 album The Black Album. The Lyrics mean there are always people who are trying to put you down and who are jealous of your success. In this song Jay-Z brags about his lavish lifestyle as is shown within the video as there are close ups of flash cars and jewellery and is basically saying that all the jealous people he can simply brush off his shoulder.

The video is narrative with Jay-Z showing off his lifestyle and singing to the camera being confident. In the video it shows Jay-Z with a lot of microphones around him which could also suggest that he is famous. there is  also girls outside the room which he is in this also has the same effect.




The colours of the video are very dark this is a convention of a R&B song as the dark colours show their dark mystical side and also having dark colours show off his jewellery better. The video starts off with a very expensive looking car pulling up and Jay-Z gets out this shows off his lavish lifestyle also. As the song starts the cutting off the shots become very quick and also go in time with the music this shows the song to be very fast paced.


Throughout the video the main theme is that of lavish cars and good looking girls this could be Jay-Z saying to all the jealous people look what I've got. Half way through the video Jay-Z clicks his fingers which causes the whole of the cities lights to go out illustrating that he is in charge of everything. The infra-red camera used shows who is there through their body heat this could be seen in a sexual way and it gives a colourful ending to a dark mystical video.

There is no musical instruments shown in the whole of the video this is because all of the attention is on Jay-Z throughout the whole video. There is a lot of microphones around him which shows he is at a radio interview singing while it shows the people on the other end of the radio listening to the song this shows that Jay-Z is famous and everyone knows it. The fast pace of cutting in the video is a usual convention of a hip-hop/R&B video.

At the start of the video there is the main narrative aspect where it says "5 minutes earlier" and later on says "later..." this is a good thing to have in the video as it lets the audience know what is going on. Also I want to have writing in my video so has given me some ideas to this. Dirt Of Your Shoulder was later again released with Linkin Park which the video has a complete different feel as Linkin Park are from a rock genre. This goes against the conventions of a usual hip hop artist collaborations.

1st Music Video Analysis. Kanye West - All of the Light ft. Rihanna.



As part of my A2 Media Studies coursework I have to analyse three music videos in detail. I have chosen the first video as Kayne West - All Of The Lights ft Rihanna.

'All Of The Lights' is a song by an American hip-hop artist Kayne West, released 18 January 2011. This song was the fourth single from his fifth studio album 'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy' Which was released in 2010 which included other additional vocals from several other recording artists, including Alicia Keys, Fergie and Rihanna.The single reached number 18 on the billboard top 100 and number 2 on the hot R&B/Hip Hop charts. The song was well-received by music critics who complimented the detailed production and dramatically themed style. The song sold over 1,000,000 copies by May 2011.

The clip, shot in Los Angeles, opens with a black and white scene of a youngster seemingly on her way to school, backpack in tow. 




Then pops of colour jump on screen as visuals of the songs lyrics glowing and blinking they appear at a dizzying speed.




It was filmed in January 2011 and directed by Hype Williams who is a well respected director in the music industry.


With the video beginning with a child walking alone down a road this could relate to the lyrics were Kayne West says "I won't let her grow up in this ghetto universally'. The video follows the lyrics throughout this is used as it keeps the audience interested and helps them to understand what the lyrics are about. Also it has a narrative within it where Kayne West finds his girlfriend sleeping with someone else this is shown in the video for the same reason. The video is not largely narrative but is enough to help the audience understand and be interested.


Quick pace of changing shots and close ups of Kayne west are regularly used throughout the music video, this makes Kayne west the centre of attention and also shows some of the conventions of a hip-hop video where the artist performing is very confident and in your face.



Some of the conventions used in this video are things like like glasses and necklace that Kayne wears this is used to show off the fact that he has the money and the lifestyle of this type of person it also shows his confident nature.


The cutting rhythm of the song is quicker than most music videos. This is because the cutting rhythm is going in  time with the speed of the song. As the song hits the bridge the cutting pace slows down and has fades in with helps to understand that the rhythm of the song is slowing down. This video is performance and narrative based but mainly performance based this is what I want my video to be like.
